Majorca

Last week I went on a trip on Majorca with my friend. We managed to see different places on the island, each of them has its own architecture, style and atmosfere. They are different but all worth to see. If you are going to spend some time there, maybe my description will encourage you to go there;)

S'Arenal
First days of our "holiday" in a middle of an academic year (:D) we spent in S'Arenal that is really touristic town, situated very close to the capital of Mallorca - Palma de Mallorca (about 20-30min by bus). The town is kind of vaccation target, so there aren't many places to see, but there you can rest for sure!!:) The beach there is beautiful at every time during a day, it's amazing. Next to beach there is a street with many tapas bars, pizzerias, restaurants and hostels, so you you can even be able to see a sea from your window!

Palma de Mallorca
Of course we couldn't miss the capital. Palma is famous for La Seu, its vast cathedral originally built on a previous mosque. Although construction began in 1229 it didn't finish until 1601 and local architect Antoni Gaudí was drafted in during a restoration project in 1901.
The Old City (in the south-east area of Palma behind the Cathedral) is a fascinating maze of streets clearly hinting towards an Arab past.
Woth to see is also Bellver Castle that is a gothic style castle on a hill 3 km of Palma. on the. It was built in the 14th century for King James II of Aragon, and is one of the few circular castles in Europe. Long used as a prison, it is now one of the main tourist attractions of the island, as well as the seat for the city's History Museum.

Sóller
The other place we went to is a city Sóller. The most fascinating thing is that you can get there by a vintage train that goes just in the middle of mountains, so views are wonderful and the journey from Palma is shorter. The city is really calm so walking through its streets will make you even more relax;)

Deià
Deià is a small coastal village on the northern ridge of Majorca. It is located about ten miles north of Valldemossa (that we also saw on our way) and it is known for its literary and musical residents. The small village has around twenty restaurants and bars that are popular with visitors from all over the world. What is really great, all houses have green doors and shutters!:) And the beach there is amazing!

Majorca is really great place to spend holidays:) There are amazing views and cities with monuments, beaches and all that you need. I can't show all our pictures because we took so many...;) But if you want to watch more sights you can see them in the following video.

Rome

Rome, I think the most magnificent city, is on the top of my list of the cities which I have to visit. Plenty of monuments, the most amazing history and the best pizza ;)

History
The city of Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river within the Lazio region of Italy. Rome's history spans overtwo and a ahalf thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was a major political and cultural influence in the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea for over four hundred years from the 1st Century BC until the 4th Century AD. Since the 2nd Century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination, in the eighth century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic. Since 1929 it is also the site of the Vatican City, an independent city-state presided over by the Pope.

Architecture of Rome
Rome's architecture over the centuries has greatly developed, especially from the Classical and Imperial Roman styles. In Rome We can meet a mixture of all the styles: renaissance, baroque, neoclassicism. In Rome We can see a lot of parks and gardens which cover a large area in Rome, and the city has one of the largest areas of green space amongst European capitals. Of course, We can admire fountains and aqueducts.

Monuments
Rome is well known for its statues, obelisks, columns and bridges. In Rome is situated Vatican where is plenty of monuments. The Vatican Museum is among the greatest museums in the world, since they display works from the immense collection built up by the Roman Catholic Church throughout the centuries.

Iceland

A small island, which recently has become very famous because one volcano (and probably it is just the beginning) and previously because the economic crisis - Iceland, land of ice and volcanos. ;)

Iceland is an island located in north Atlantic Ocean (near Artic Circle) on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Island is also a country with Reykjavík as capital city and 3 people / km2 (which gives a 317.593 population at 103.000 km2).

Reykjavík

If you will be on Iceland you should visit:
  • Reykjavík - the world's northernmost capital and city is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement in Iceland around 870.
  • Eyjafjallajokull - recently the most famous volcano in the Europe, which caused major delays in flights of aircraft... and probably this is only prelude to eruption of:
  • Katla - bigger volcano than Eyjafjallajokull that should couse more problems in flights that "little Eyjafjallajokull".
  • Vatnajökull National Park - the largest national park in Europe (covers 12.000 km2 11% of Iceland. "The battle between ice and fire" still rages within park's boundaries.
  • Glaciers and geezers over Iceland. ;)

Paris

So now my next destination is Paris. I go there to my friend who is currently living in Paris. Paris is the capital and primate city of France. Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres.
In Paris is many attractive places to visit. First of all when You are in Paris You have to see the Eiffel Tower. Besides it Paris has beautiful panorama and architecture of city. Much of contemporary Paris is the result of the vast mid-nineteenth urban remodelling. Most of this 'new' Paris is the Paris we see today. The building code has seen few changes since, and the Second Empire plans are in many cases still followed. A building's height is limited according to the width of the streets it lines, is difficult to get an approval to build a taller building.

Monuments and Landmarks
Three of the most famous Parisian landmarks are the twelfth-century cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, the Napoleonic Arc de Triomphe and the nineteenth-century Eiffel Tower.

Parks and Gardens
Two of Paris' oldest and famous gardens are the Tuileries Garden, created in the 16th century for a palace on the banks of the Seine near the Louvre, and the Left bank Luxembourg Garden, another former private garden belonging to a château. The Jardin des Plantes, created by Louis XIII's doctor Guy de la Brosse for the cultivation of medicinal plants, was Paris' first public garden.

Entertainment and performing arts
Paris' largest opera houses are the nineteenth-century Opéra Garnier (historical Paris Opéra) and modern Opéra Bastille; the former tends towards the more classic ballets and operas, and the latter provides a mixed repertoire of classic and modern.

Wrocław

My friends have already written about their cities so maybe it's time for me to boast;) There are so many different things I could tell about my city that actually I don't know where to start...
I'm not going to write about history, rather about some interesting things about Wrocław or places due to which you will love the city;)

Town Hall...
Wrocław Town Hall is one of the oldest town halls in Poland. Additionally, on the high tower you can find the oldest in Poland bell clock,as well as the oldest tower clock since 1368. In the basement of the building is the oldest (of the fourteenth century) restaurant in Europe - Piwnica Świdnicka.
Town Hall

Rynek...
Rynek (market square) is the main meeting place in Wrocław. Everyone should see it because of the brilliantly painted buildings around and the eye-catching Gothic Town Hall from the fourteenth century Town Hall that I mentioned about before.
Wrocław is some kind of students' city so eat any time during the day and night you will meet many people there. All around the market square there are many bars, pubs, restaurants and clubs, all really close to each other so always you will find something that you like!
Rynek
Ostrów Tumski...
Ostrów Tumski ("Cathedral Island") is the oldest part of Wrocław. Built on what used to be an island ("ostrów", in old Polish), it was an early crossing point on the Oder River.
The Cathedral that is located there is one of
the largests icon of Wroclaw seen from almost any corner of the city. This Gothic basilica with a height 91 m and length 68 m for a long time was the tallest building in Wroclaw. The beautiful building keeps a number of traces of the history.
What is also really interested about Ostrów Tumski is that there are 90 gas lantern that every day are switched on and off by the Lamplighter:)

Ostrów Tumski with the Cathedral
Venice...
Wroclaw is the fourth city in Europe in terms of number of bridges (and footbridges), ranking just behind Amsterdam and Venice, and St. Petersburg. That's why some people call the city the Polish Venice.
Grunwaldzki Bridge
Wrocław - tale...
Maybe someone doesn't believe but in Wrocław there are dwarfs, just like from the tale. But they are real! The dwarf is about one foot in height, has a beard, pointed hat and pointed shoes.
You can meet them on the street, sometimes you can even stumble because of them. What is so magnificent? That they are not the same, every dwarf has its name and own style that depends on how it is called:)
Two dwarfs on the Świdnicka Street

And much more!! You have to some and get to know Wrocław:)
