Majorca

Last week I went on a trip on Majorca with my friend. We managed to see different places on the island, each of them has its own architecture, style and atmosfere. They are different but all worth to see. If you are going to spend some time there, maybe my description will encourage you to go there;)

S'Arenal
First days of our "holiday" in a middle of an academic year (:D) we spent in S'Arenal that is really touristic town, situated very close to the capital of Mallorca - Palma de Mallorca (about 20-30min by bus). The town is kind of vaccation target, so there aren't many places to see, but there you can rest for sure!!:) The beach there is beautiful at every time during a day, it's amazing. Next to beach there is a street with many tapas bars, pizzerias, restaurants and hostels, so you you can even be able to see a sea from your window!

Palma de Mallorca
Of course we couldn't miss the capital. Palma is famous for La Seu, its vast cathedral originally built on a previous mosque. Although construction began in 1229 it didn't finish until 1601 and local architect Antoni Gaudí was drafted in during a restoration project in 1901.
The Old City (in the south-east area of Palma behind the Cathedral) is a fascinating maze of streets clearly hinting towards an Arab past.
Woth to see is also Bellver Castle that is a gothic style castle on a hill 3 km of Palma. on the. It was built in the 14th century for King James II of Aragon, and is one of the few circular castles in Europe. Long used as a prison, it is now one of the main tourist attractions of the island, as well as the seat for the city's History Museum.

Sóller
The other place we went to is a city Sóller. The most fascinating thing is that you can get there by a vintage train that goes just in the middle of mountains, so views are wonderful and the journey from Palma is shorter. The city is really calm so walking through its streets will make you even more relax;)

Deià
Deià is a small coastal village on the northern ridge of Majorca. It is located about ten miles north of Valldemossa (that we also saw on our way) and it is known for its literary and musical residents. The small village has around twenty restaurants and bars that are popular with visitors from all over the world. What is really great, all houses have green doors and shutters!:) And the beach there is amazing!

Majorca is really great place to spend holidays:) There are amazing views and cities with monuments, beaches and all that you need. I can't show all our pictures because we took so many...;) But if you want to watch more sights you can see them in the following video.

Rome

Rome, I think the most magnificent city, is on the top of my list of the cities which I have to visit. Plenty of monuments, the most amazing history and the best pizza ;)

History
The city of Rome is located in the central-western portion of the Italian Peninsula, on the Tiber river within the Lazio region of Italy. Rome's history spans overtwo and a ahalf thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was a major political and cultural influence in the lands bordering the Mediterranean Sea for over four hundred years from the 1st Century BC until the 4th Century AD. Since the 2nd Century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzantine domination, in the eighth century it became the capital of the Papal States, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic. Since 1929 it is also the site of the Vatican City, an independent city-state presided over by the Pope.

Architecture of Rome
Rome's architecture over the centuries has greatly developed, especially from the Classical and Imperial Roman styles. In Rome We can meet a mixture of all the styles: renaissance, baroque, neoclassicism. In Rome We can see a lot of parks and gardens which cover a large area in Rome, and the city has one of the largest areas of green space amongst European capitals. Of course, We can admire fountains and aqueducts.

Monuments
Rome is well known for its statues, obelisks, columns and bridges. In Rome is situated Vatican where is plenty of monuments. The Vatican Museum is among the greatest museums in the world, since they display works from the immense collection built up by the Roman Catholic Church throughout the centuries.

Iceland

A small island, which recently has become very famous because one volcano (and probably it is just the beginning) and previously because the economic crisis - Iceland, land of ice and volcanos. ;)

Iceland is an island located in north Atlantic Ocean (near Artic Circle) on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Island is also a country with Reykjavík as capital city and 3 people / km2 (which gives a 317.593 population at 103.000 km2).

Reykjavík

If you will be on Iceland you should visit:
  • Reykjavík - the world's northernmost capital and city is believed to be the location of the first permanent settlement in Iceland around 870.
  • Eyjafjallajokull - recently the most famous volcano in the Europe, which caused major delays in flights of aircraft... and probably this is only prelude to eruption of:
  • Katla - bigger volcano than Eyjafjallajokull that should couse more problems in flights that "little Eyjafjallajokull".
  • Vatnajökull National Park - the largest national park in Europe (covers 12.000 km2 11% of Iceland. "The battle between ice and fire" still rages within park's boundaries.
  • Glaciers and geezers over Iceland. ;)

Paris

So now my next destination is Paris. I go there to my friend who is currently living in Paris. Paris is the capital and primate city of France. Paris is today one of the world's leading business and cultural centres.
In Paris is many attractive places to visit. First of all when You are in Paris You have to see the Eiffel Tower. Besides it Paris has beautiful panorama and architecture of city. Much of contemporary Paris is the result of the vast mid-nineteenth urban remodelling. Most of this 'new' Paris is the Paris we see today. The building code has seen few changes since, and the Second Empire plans are in many cases still followed. A building's height is limited according to the width of the streets it lines, is difficult to get an approval to build a taller building.

Monuments and Landmarks
Three of the most famous Parisian landmarks are the twelfth-century cathedral Notre Dame de Paris, the Napoleonic Arc de Triomphe and the nineteenth-century Eiffel Tower.

Parks and Gardens
Two of Paris' oldest and famous gardens are the Tuileries Garden, created in the 16th century for a palace on the banks of the Seine near the Louvre, and the Left bank Luxembourg Garden, another former private garden belonging to a château. The Jardin des Plantes, created by Louis XIII's doctor Guy de la Brosse for the cultivation of medicinal plants, was Paris' first public garden.

Entertainment and performing arts
Paris' largest opera houses are the nineteenth-century Opéra Garnier (historical Paris Opéra) and modern Opéra Bastille; the former tends towards the more classic ballets and operas, and the latter provides a mixed repertoire of classic and modern.

Wrocław

My friends have already written about their cities so maybe it's time for me to boast;) There are so many different things I could tell about my city that actually I don't know where to start...
I'm not going to write about history, rather about some interesting things about Wrocław or places due to which you will love the city;)

Town Hall...
Wrocław Town Hall is one of the oldest town halls in Poland. Additionally, on the high tower you can find the oldest in Poland bell clock,as well as the oldest tower clock since 1368. In the basement of the building is the oldest (of the fourteenth century) restaurant in Europe - Piwnica Świdnicka.
Town Hall

Rynek...
Rynek (market square) is the main meeting place in Wrocław. Everyone should see it because of the brilliantly painted buildings around and the eye-catching Gothic Town Hall from the fourteenth century Town Hall that I mentioned about before.
Wrocław is some kind of students' city so eat any time during the day and night you will meet many people there. All around the market square there are many bars, pubs, restaurants and clubs, all really close to each other so always you will find something that you like!
Rynek
Ostrów Tumski...
Ostrów Tumski ("Cathedral Island") is the oldest part of Wrocław. Built on what used to be an island ("ostrów", in old Polish), it was an early crossing point on the Oder River.
The Cathedral that is located there is one of
the largests icon of Wroclaw seen from almost any corner of the city. This Gothic basilica with a height 91 m and length 68 m for a long time was the tallest building in Wroclaw. The beautiful building keeps a number of traces of the history.
What is also really interested about Ostrów Tumski is that there are 90 gas lantern that every day are switched on and off by the Lamplighter:)

Ostrów Tumski with the Cathedral
Venice...
Wroclaw is the fourth city in Europe in terms of number of bridges (and footbridges), ranking just behind Amsterdam and Venice, and St. Petersburg. That's why some people call the city the Polish Venice.
Grunwaldzki Bridge
Wrocław - tale...
Maybe someone doesn't believe but in Wrocław there are dwarfs, just like from the tale. But they are real! The dwarf is about one foot in height, has a beard, pointed hat and pointed shoes.
You can meet them on the street, sometimes you can even stumble because of them. What is so magnificent? That they are not the same, every dwarf has its name and own style that depends on how it is called:)
Two dwarfs on the Świdnicka Street

And much more!! You have to some and get to know Wrocław:)

Łódź

Łódź is my home city. I born there and spend almost all my life.
Łódź is the third-largest city in Poland. Located in the central part of the country, it had a population of 744,541 in June 2009. It is the capital of Łódź Voivodeship, and is approximately 135 kilometres (84 mi) south-west of Warsaw. The city's coat of arms is an example of canting: depicting a boat, it alludes to the city's name which translates literally as "boat".

Łódź in literature and cinema
Three major novels depict the development of industrial Łódź. Władysław Reymont's Ziemia Obiecana (The Promised Land) (1898), Joseph Roth's Hotel Savoy (1924) and Israel Joshua Singer's Di Brider Ashkenazi (The Brothers Ashkenazi) (1937). Roth's novel depicts the city on the eve of a workers' riot in 1919. Reymont's novel was made into a film by Andrzej Wajda in 1975: see The Promised Land. In the 1990 film Europa Europa, Solomon Perel's family flees pre-WWII Berlin and settles in Łódź. Scenes of David Lynch's 2006 film Inland Empire were shot in Łódź.

Canada

World's second largest country (after Russia) but inhabited only by 34 milion people - Canada.

Maple Leaf

Canada is country that have "borders" with three oceans: Atlantic on the east, Pacific on the west and Artic on the north and occupies a large part of North America. The capital city is Ottawa, but Toronto is the bigest city of Canada.

Around the world Canada is known for e.g.
  • Flag of Canada with maple leaf and is also known as Maple Leaf.
  • The Royal Canadian Mounted Police - the national police of Canada with characteristic red uniforms.
  • Ice Hockey - this sport born in Canada and is national sport of this country (Go Canada! ;)).

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers

But what I can see in Canada?
  • Niagara Falls on the Niagara River - one of the most spectacular and famous waterfalls in the world.
  • The Thousand Islands - archipelago of island on Saint Lawrence River.
  • Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and other interesting places. ;)
Niagara Falls

But in my opinion if you want to know Canada you should travel, e.g by car throughout the country (another position on my "trip list" ;)). :)

New Zealand

Nowadays probably everyone know the trilogy Lord of the Rings. Why do I mention it here? Because it was the film based on this masterpiece, that has had a massive impact on showing the world just how beautiful New Zealand's landscapes really are.
Until now, New Zealand is just in my dreams, but who know, maybe I will be able to make the "hobbits' journey" in the future;)

Where is New Zealand?

New Zealand is located in the south-western Pacific Ocean, on the south of Australia. Comprises two main islands, the North and South Islands, Te Ika a Maui and Te Wai Pounamu (in Māori), and a number of smaller islands all around. The early Polynesian settlers called the country Aotearoa, meaning Land of the Long White Cloud. It is a name by which New Zealand is quite often known nowadays.

New Zealand - North Island

Are both islands the same?
This is what is also special and worth to know. The two islands have surprisingly different characters!! The North Island consists of volcanic landscapes and highly active thermal areas, long stretches of beautiful beaches and excellent sailing, ancient forests and a strong Maori cultural
influence. The South Island has a slower pace of life dominated by a magnificent spine of mountains, the snow-covered Southern Alps and the spectacular scenery of the southern waterways of the fjord lands, with glaciers, deep lakes and verdant forests.
Isn't it amazing? So many magnificents views and landscapes in one country!

Milford Sound, one of most famous place on the South Island

Why is it so magnifcent?
Those who read the previous paragraph probably alredy know why, but it's just a part.
Maybe the size of New Zealand isn't really large, but it doesn't mean that the bigger country, the more magnificent is. New Zeland with its magnificent natural beauty has an incredible amount to offer. So travelers usually complain only that they didn't have enough time in the country.
Fresh air, breathtaking scenery and outdoor activities are the main attractions of New Zealand, with a tremendously friendly, honest and helpful population. Oh, I shouldn't forget also about flightless kiwi bird, one of the symbols of New Zealand - it's the only place we can meet it;)

Flightless kiwi - a national icon

What does it offer?
All that I mentioned above and much more.
New Zealand offers a huge variety of activities:
- bungee jumping
- skiing
- swimming with dolphins
- scenic flights
- boat cruises on the fjords
- world famous walking trails with unrivalled scenery.
Alternatively visitors can of course get to know a bit about culture at the museums and galleries of the country's main cities - Auckland, the capital Wellington in the North, and Christ Church in the south.

Now, after all these facts, the only thing that left is to go there!! Right now I know that it would be the unforgettable journey. See you there:)

Hawaiian Islands

What is the highest mountain in the world? Mount Everest? No, the highest is Mauna Kea with 9100 m absolute hight on island of Hawaii. :D So today I will write about Hawaiian Islands.

Mauna Kea

The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands:
  • Hawaii ("The Big Island") - is the largest island in Hawaiian islands chain.
  • Maui ("The Valley Isle")
  • Kahoʻolawe ("The Target Isle")
  • Lānaʻi ("The Pineapple Isle")
  • Molokaʻi ("The Friendly Isle")
  • Oʻahu ("The Gathering Place") - the most populous of the Hawaiian islands chain (approximately 75% of the resident population)
  • Kauaʻi ("The Garden Isle")
  • Niʻihau ("The Forbidden Isle")
several atolls, numerous smaller islands (total of 137 islands) in the North Pacific Ocean and are the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain. Hawaiian Islands (excluding Midway island) also form the 50th state of United State, state of Hawaii.

Hawaiian Islands was discovered by James Cook in 1778 and named "Sandwich Islands". On February 22, 1900 islands became United States territory and became the 50th state on August 21, 1959.

Waikiki beach, Oahu

Currently, Hawaii is visited by millions of tourists each year who want to see, inter alia:
  • The Great Crack (island of Hawaiʻi) - an 13 km long, 18 m wide and 18 m deep fissure
  • Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (island of Hawaiʻi) - with active volcanoes.
  • Hāna Highway (Maui) - runs along the east coast of island, curving around many mountains and passing by black sand beaches and waterfalls.
  • Pearl Harbor (Oahu) - attack on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan on December 7, 1941, brought the United States into World War II
  • and Oahu beaches (e.g. Waikiki)

The Palm Islands

Everything started in May 2002...construction is believed to be finished in the next 10-15 years, but even now is the self-declared 'Eighth Wonder of the World'.

And I totally agree with that, THEY are amazing. They, I mean the islands - three largest man-made islands in the world, which are being built on the coast of the emirate of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The are called The Palm Islands, but also referred to as The Palm Dubai and simply The Palms. How they are situated is presented on the picture below.

The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Ali and the Palm Deira. They were commissioned by the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to boost the country’s tourism industry, adding 520 km of beaches to the city of Dubai.

As a curio I can say that the first two islands will comprise approximately 100 million cubic meters of rock and sand. Palm Deira will be composed of approximately 1 billion cubic meters of rock and sand!!

What is so amazing?
Their shape - each of the islands are being built in the shape of a date palm tree and consist of a trunk, a crown with fronds, and are surrounded by a crescent island that acts as a breakwater. There are some differences between them, but each one make a big impression.
The Jumeirah Palm island is primarily a retreat and residential area for living, relaxation, and leisure.
The Jebel Ali Palm is more of an entertainment destination for both adults and children, which caters to both residents and tourists.
The Deira Palm will consist of residential property, marinas, shopping malls, sports facilities, and clubs.

What we can find there?
The islands will support:
- luxury hotels
- freehold residential villas
- unique water homes
- shoreline apartments
- marinas
- water theme parks
- restaurants
- shopping malls
- sports facilities
- health spas
- cinemas
- various diving sites...

...so everything that a real tourist need:D

Warsaw

Warsaw
is the capital and largest city of my country - Poland. It is located on the Vistula River roughly 360 kilometers (224 mi) from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometers (186 mi) from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population as of June 2009 was estimated at 1,711,466, and the Warsaw metropolitan area at approximately 2,785,000. Warsaw is the 9th largest city in the European Union by population.

Overview

Warsaw's mixture of architectural styles reflects the turbulent history of the city and country. During WWII, Warsaw was razed to the ground by bombing raids and planned destruction. After liberation, rebuilding began as in other cities of the communist-ruled PRL. Most of the historical buildings were thoroughly reconstructed. However, some of the buildings from the 19th century that had been preserved in reasonably reconstructible form were nonetheless eradicated in the 1950s and 1960s.Mass residential blocks were erected, with basic design typical of Eastern bloc countries.

Public spaces attract heavy investment, so that the city has gained entirely new squares, parks and monuments. Warsaw's current urban landscape is one of modern and contemporary architecture.

Trans-Siberian Railway

Over 9.000 kilometers, 6 days and 7 timezones... the expedition, which I'm planning for a long time - Trans-Siberian Railway.

It's the third-longest railway in the world and was built from 1891 to 1916 (first plans was ready in 1889). Trans-Siberian Railway was built to connect capital city of Russia Moscow and port of Vladivostok at the Pacific Ocean. During trip train will visit Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Chelyabinsk, cross one of the largest rivers in Europe and Asia like Volga, Yenisei and Amur.

But it's not only train: near Irkutsk located is Lake Bajkal (on the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996), the depest and one of the clearest lakes in the world.

Information from (also information about tickets and prices):

Gran Canaria

I and my friends spent 4 days at this beautiful island. Gran Canaria is an island of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean about 150 kilometers of the northwestern coast of Africa and about 1350 km from Europe. Gran Canaria is the second most populous island of the Canary Islands after Tenerife.

This trip was very interesting and diferent than others. Becuase we rented a car and we was traveling around whole island. What suprised me it was landform. The connection of the coast and high mountains creates amazing landscapes. Deeper in the land, the higer mountain We could see.

We visited almost whole island. We have been in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico, Aguimes. But the most beautiful city for me was Maspalomas. I like this place because of nice beaches and perfect dunes.

Tangier

Now ill move on to Africa and exactly to the most northern of all African cities, and the closest one to mainland Europe – Tangier.

Tangier is known for its very rich history due to the historical presence of many civilizations and cultures, Tangier was founded in the early 5th century BC by Carthaginian colonists, the city was ruled by many civilizations such as Umayyads, Abbasids, Idrisids, Fatimids, Caliphate of Cordoba, Maghrawa and many others, Morocco reintegrated the city of Tangier in 1956.

Kasbah

As any Moroccan town, the Kasbah (old quarters) is almost a mandatory visit if you are interested in feeling "the life" of the city and being close to the locals.
The Grand Socco

It is also worth to see the Grand and Petit Socco (markets) without forgetting about the most known café Hafa. The café is in a steep hillside and shaded by trees and shrubs known for its mint tea, a Tangier special brew. From the terrace of Café Hafa you can sip tea and enjoy stunning views over the strait of Gibraltar.

Café Hafa

Tangier is a very popular tourist destination not only for its rich history but also for it’s a location between the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic Ocean which make a very good place for those who like to enjoy the sun and the beach, where you can spend the day sunbathing enjoy the water and watch little soccer games or the incredible gymnastics beach athletes performances.

Tangier beach

If you still hestitate or would like to see more, take a look at this video showing Tangier:

Budapest

If you are in Hungary, you can not forget about capital of this country - Budapest.

History of Budapest begins when the Celts founded the city Ak-Ink on the Danaube river, which was taken by the Romans, who named it Aquincum and became the main city of Lower Pannonia. The ancestors of Hungarians, Magyars arrived in the territory in the 9th century, but their first settlement was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241-42. Budapest became a single city occupying both banks of the river Danube with a unification on 17 November 1873 of right Buda and Óbuda with Pest (Buda-Pest).

Today Budapest is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with multiple places on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you will be in Budapest you can not miss:
  • Buda Castle - is one of the most famous and most visited sights of Budapest.
  • Millennium Underground Railway - the second oldest underground in the world!
  • The Houses of Parliament - neo-Gothic building contains amongst other things the Hungarian Crown Jewels
  • Thermal Baths - Budapest is also known as the City of Spas.
  • and other places and buildings from World Heritage Sites list like River Danube embankments, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and others.

Good idea is to combine sightseeing in Budapest with spending few days at Balaton Lake. :)

Morocco

Morocco is a country located in North Africa. It has a population of nearly 32 million. Its capital is Rabat.

I and my friends spent in Morocco 7 days. We started our journey in Tangier.
Tangier didn't look like tipical Morocoo city. This is kind of European city with a large amount of hotels and pubs.

Then we visited Fes. It is a city whit the biggest medina - is typically walled, contains many narrow and maze-like streets. Unfortunatelly one Arab guy persude me to buy the carpet :D. There we spent almost 2 days.

Our next destination was desert.

On the desert I spent the greatest time. There we have a lot of fun and adventure.
  • travel with 4x4 jeep through the desert
  • Camels travel to berber's village
  • the night on the desert
  • sunrise on the desert

We didn't have oportunity and time to try ski on the desert. But next time we have to try!! ;)

Next we also visited Marrakech. We spent there one day on walking and sightseeing. Then we came back to Tangier were we have our flight to Spain.

Gibraltar - the last British colony in Europe

Gibraltar is the place that is visited by many tourists from Spain. I also hope that I will have some time to see it. There are several really interesting thing about this city, related to the history as well as to the places we can see there.
The Rock of Gibraltar
Where is it?
Gibraltar is the city and the port, situated on the south coast of the Iberian Peninsula at the Mediterranean Sea. Most of this area is covered by a Gibraltar Rock, that is 4,8km lenght and 427m high. The area of Gibraltar is only 6,5 square kilometers and it's the most populated territory in the world where in one km² live 4,3 thousands of inhabitants.

History - don't worry, just few sentences;)
The fortress was built by the Arabs and conquered by Spain in 1462. Since 1714 under the peace of Utrecht, Spain had to pass the peninsula to Great Britain and in 1830 Gibraltar became the official colony of Great Britain. So the official language there is English, but many people can speak fluently also Spanish.

What is so interesting in this city?
Gibraltar became the place where I want to go, so I read many information about it. Now I would like to present some facts that I remembered because of their originality;)

Gibraltar has no natural resources so there are limits in freshwater. In rock-hewn reservoirs the water, that later is used for consumable aims, is stored.

Gibraltar is the only place in Europe where you can meet free-living Barbary Macaques monkeys. They are considered to be the top tourist attraction. Many tourists take photos with them. Nevertheless, one should bear in mind that they can steal our property, a mobile phone or a handbag.
Monkey in Gibraltar

Really interesting is also the airport in Gibraltar. The runway crosses the road, so for the taking off or landing time of the aeroplane, the barriers (like at rail crossing) are closed.
Gibraltar airport

One of the main tourist attractions is a labyrinth of tunnels and caves. Nowadays the biggest one - St. Michael’s Cave became the concert hall for thousand people due to its natural acoustic properties.

It is also worth to mention about Strait of Gibraltar. It connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. The Strait’s narrowest point counts 14 kilometres width and 300 metres depth.

Virtual Tour

Balaton Lake

The largest lake of Central Europe is located in Hungary. A long time ago I spent few days there to see the eclipse of the sun (in 1999), but then nobody heard about digital cameras so I can't paste my photos here. ;-)

Balaton is located in Transdanubia region and sometimes called "Hungarian Sea". Lake is long at 77 kilometers and wide at 14 kilometers, covers an area of 592 km2 (Balaton was about twice larger than at the present before 1863, when Sio-canal was opened and connected Balaton with Danaube river). Balaton is not deep, average depth is 3.2 m and maximum depth is 12.2 m. The best time to vacation at Lake Balaton is the period from June to August. Then, the average water temperature is 25 °C.

The major resorts around the lake are Siófok, Keszthely and Balatonfüred. Siófok is also called "Summer Capital of Hungary". On the northern shore of Balaton is located Tihany peninsula with Tirana hill, which offer a beautiful view of the entire lake. In the vicinity of Balaton Lake are well known hot spring. One of the most famous is in Heviz, where the water temperature in geyser reaches 38 degrees!

Hot springs in Heviz

Do not forget about Hungarian inn, where you can try typical Hungarian dishes.
